시 식 탐 험
상상으로 요리하고, 문화로 맛보다
〈시식탐험〉은 음식을 매개로 서로 다른 문화적 배경을 지닌 참여자들이 타문화를 상상적, 실험적 방식으로 경험하고 재해석하는 시민 참여형 요리 프로젝트이다. 프로그램은 사전 리서치를 통해 선정된 세 개의 음식을 기반으로 진행되며, 음식의 이름과 재료 정보가 완전히 제거된 ‘이미지 보드’만을 단서로 제공한다. 청년, 어르신, 평택 거주 미군 가족 등 세 개 참여자 그룹은 각자에게 익숙한 식재료를 사용해 이미지 속 음식을 상상하며 조리한다. 조리 과정과 완성된 음식은 사진과 영상으로 기록되며, 별도로 구성된 시식단과 함께 각 그룹의 해석을 맛보고 이야기한다. 특히 시식단에는 해당 음식 문화권의 참여자가 최소 한 명 이상 포함되도록 하여, 음식이라는 매개가 경험과 기억이 교차하는 실질적 접점으로 작동하도록 구성하였다. 본 프로그램은 조아영양연구소, 지산동정모, Island Bites(아프리칸 셰프), 불나방기획단의 협업으로 운영된다. 〈시식탐험〉은 시각 정보만으로 음식을 상상해 조리하는 과정에서 발생하는 혼란, 즐거움, 창조적 상상의 순간들을 새로운 문화적 경험으로 확장한다. 이 과정에서 원래 음식 문화가 지닌 고유한 맥락은 일시적으로 해체되고, 참여자들의 기억, 경험, 취향이 개입되며, ‘미션 음식’은 전혀 다른 모습으로 재구성된다. 이는 날것의 재료가 조리를 거쳐 새로운 음식으로 탄생하듯, 문화 또한 충돌, 흡수, 재해석을 거쳐 재형성되는 살아 있는 과정임을 체감하게 한다. 더 나아가 〈시식탐험〉은 빠르게 변화하는 지역의 문화지형 속에서 서로 다른 문화가 어떻게 만나고, 섞이고, 낯설게 조우하며, 다시 구성되는지에 대해 함께 사유할 수 있는 임시 공론의 장을 마련한다. 음식이라는 감각적, 문화적 매개를 통해 참여자들은 문화적 차이가 만들어내는 거리뿐 아니라, 그 거리 자체가 새로운 이해의 가능성을 여는 지점임을 경험한다. 이를 통해 문화적 편견이나 선입견은 완화되고, 관찰-상상-사고의 범위는 보다 유연하게 확장된다.
Tasteventure Cooking Through Imagination, Tasting Through Culture Tasteventure is a participatory cooking project where participants reinterpret unfamiliar cuisines using only visual clues. Three selected dishes-presented as image boards without names or ingredient information-are given to three groups: youth, elders, and U.S. military families living in Pyeongtaek. Each group cooks the imagined dish using ingredients familiar within their own cultural backgrounds. The cooking process and final dishes are documented through photo and video, followed by a communal tasting session that includes at least one participant from the dish’s original cultural context. Food becomes a point of encounter where different memories, experiences, and sensory habits intersect. The project is produced in collaboration with the Joa Nutrition Research Lab, Jisan-dong Jeongmo, Island Bites, and BNB Production. By cooking from sight rather than knowledge, Tasteventure reveals how confusion, play, and imagination can open new cultural experiences. As participants’ memories and tastes reshape the original dish, Tasteventure reveals how culture itself shifts through contact, reinterpretation.
