응시와 응답: 시선의 아카이브에서 ‘우리’라는 지도로
〈씨 유 씨 미〉는 ‘응시’라는 가장 근원적 행위를 통해, 서로 다른 문화적 배경을 가진 개인들이 어떻게 타자를 인식하고 해석하며 다시 관계 맺게 되는지를 시각적으로 탐구하는 프로젝트이다. 대안공간 샐리 1층 전시장과 평택 전역의 일상적 장소를 촬영 현장으로 확장하여, 참여자들의 ‘눈’을 근접 촬영하는 작업의 과정은 도시 곳곳의 시선을 모아 하나의 집합적 이미지 아카이브를 구축한다. 눈이라는 신체의 가장 작은 표면을 통해 타자를 바라보는 이 방식은-고대 이집트의 호루스의 눈(Eye of Horus)에서 현대 참여예술의 상징적 언어가 된 JR의 〈28mm〉 프로젝트에 이르기까지-시선의 재현이 지녀온 문화적·사회적 상징성과 긴밀히 연결된다. 그러나 〈씨 유 씨 미〉는 이러한 전통을 엄숙하게 계승하기보다, 누구나 쉽게 참여할 수 있는 사진이라는 매체를 통해 응시의 행위를 일상적이고 유연한 관계 맺기의 실험으로 재구성한다. 촬영된 이미지는 온라인 플랫폼에서 1차적으로 공유되고, 일부는 인화된 사진으로 전시되며, 또 다른 일부는 천연 직물에 인쇄되어 협력 단체 바느질 놀이터와 함께 유기농 눈 찜질용 아이패치로 제작된다. 이러한 세 단계의 변환 과정은 시각적 이미지가 전시장의 오브제에 머무르지 않고 다시 참여자의 일상으로 ‘돌아가는’ 순환적 구조를 형성한다. 가 안내하는 예술은 감상의 대상으로 고정되지 않고, 삶의 감각적 층위 안에서 다시 기능하며, 실질적 사용성과 정서적 돌봄의 형태로 개인에게 되돌아간다.
SEE YOU SEE ME Gazes Collected, Us Revealed See You See Me is a project that explores how individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds perceive, interpret, and reconfigure their relationships with one another through the primal act of looking. Expanding the photographic site from the first-floor gallery of SALLY to everyday spaces across Pyeongtaek, the project creates a collective archive of images by capturing close-up photographs of participants’ eyes. Choosing the eye—the smallest yet most expressive surface of the body—as the locus of gaze connects the project to a long lineage of visual symbolism: from the ancient Egyptian Eye of Horus to JR’s 28mm project, where the photographed eye becomes a civic and participatory gesture. See You See Me gently inherits these visual traditions, not through solemn appropriation but through an accessible, everyday medium: photography. Through this, the act of looking is transformed into an open, flexible experiment in relational encounter. The captured images circulate through a three-stage process of transformation. First, they are shared online. Next, a selection is presented in photographic form within the exhibition. Finally, a curated group of images is printed onto natural fabric and crafted into organic eye masks in collaboration with #jasuhope_. This cycle allows the visual image to move beyond the gallery, returning to the participant’s daily life as an object of use and quiet care. In this movement—from gaze to image, from exhibition to everyday life—See You, See Me demonstrates how art does not remain a distant object of contemplation but becomes an active, sensory presence that settles back into the lives of those who shaped it.
